漂流してきた焼尻島

むかし、蝦夷ヶ島に大きな陥没が起こり、一夜にして巨大な湖ができたといいます。

それが、現在の支笏湖です。

その大地を揺るがすような激動によって、大津波が発生し、はるか千歳まで押し寄せました。

津波は千歳神社の裏山を根こそぎ引きちぎり、その土塊をどんどん海へと押し流していきました。

やがてそれは日本海まで流され、海の上にぽっかりと浮かぶ島となりました。

その島は長いあいだ日本海を漂い続け、とうとう留萌の沖合まで流れ着き、そこでようやく動きを止めたといいます。

それが、今の焼尻島なのだそうです。

そして、島が千歳から押し流されていったときに大地に残された溝が、現在の千歳川になった――。

そんな壮大な物語が、焼尻島には昔から伝えられています。

もちろん、これはあくまでも伝説です。

けれど、海に浮かぶ焼尻島を眺めていると、

「もしかしたら本当に、遠い昔にどこかから漂流してきた島なのでは……」

そんな想像をしてみたくなる、島ならではの楽しい民話です。

The Island That Drifted to Yagishiri

Long ago, a great subsidence occurred in the land of Ezo. In a single night, a huge lake appeared.

This lake is said to be what we now know as Lake Shikotsu.

The upheaval caused by this enormous event sent a great tsunami surging across the land, reaching as far as Chitose.

The tsunami tore away the mountain behind Chitose Shrine and pushed it out toward the sea. It was carried farther and farther until it reached the Sea of Japan, where it floated like a huge island.

After drifting across the Sea of Japan for a very long time, it finally reached the coast of Rumoi and came to rest.

That, the legend says, is how Yagishiri Island came to be.

And the groove left behind when the land was torn away and swept toward the sea became what we now know as the Chitose River.

It is, of course, an old folk tale—but what a wonderful story it is.
